Short summary
Purbright and Love attend the funeral of a prominent Flaxborough citizen, Councilman Harold Carobleat, who was under investigation for a variety of potential felonies at the time of his death. They observe that the event is also attended by some of the town's leading citizens, a doctor, an undertaker, a newspaper publisher, and a lawyer. At the reading of the will by lawyer Rodney Gloss, Mrs. Carobleat is shaken to hear that the bulk of her husband's estate has been left to the publisher, neighbor Marcus Gwill. Shortly thereafter, after a late-night meeting with the other three, Gwill is found electrocuted by a power relay tower with the imprint of a daffodil burned into his palm. Purbright is faced with the type of case he most detests... murder by conspiracy.
