Short summary

Raylan and Boyd separately find out why Avery Markham is buying up all the land in Harlan, as well as the consequences if you don't cooperate. Meanwhile, Katherine Hale pays an unexpected visit to Ava.

Katherine Hale tells Ava a joke about Bill and Hillary Clinton. Katherine is played by Arkansas native Mary Steenburgen, who in her real life has been friendly with the Clintons since the early 1980s, when Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas.

Man, this episode was so intense and so funny at the same time, two of the many reasons I enjoy this show so much.

We got to see Raylan finally getting an episode where he could show why he's the main lead, but that still didn't put Boyd out of the picture, he got a very funny scene with Wynn Duffy tonight that sure marks this show as one of the most amazing things ever done for TV.

The villains got a very good amount of screen time as well, Katherine Hale, Avery Markham and Ty Walker were all over the screen tonight, all of them being part of some great moments that keep pushing the story forward, the confrontation between Raylan and Markham was even more intense than the one Markham had with Boyd on the last episode.

It was great to see (SPOILER ALERT!) Art, Dickie and Loretta having some good scenes tonight, the last two returning after quite some time and enlightening the story just as they did on Season 2 when the entire Bennett Clan was still around.

With basically one third of the final season gone, they're really building something big for the final episodes, Justified has always being known as a show that has slow effect at the beginning, but it bursts through our heads just like a smooth wine when we drink it too much and too fast, we got that for five seasons and I hope they continue to get it right until the very last moment.

This show will certainly be missed when it's gone, hope it gets more popular somehow.

    MVP's:

    Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant).

    Avery Markham (Sam Elliott).

    Katherine Hale (Mary Steenburgen).

On the one hand, 'The Trash and the Snake' feels like one of Justified's lower-key episode, but there's a lot of moving parts to this.

    • Jake Busey, making the most of a short-live guest shot

    • Art reappearing for a heavyweight heart-to-heart with Raylan

    • Dickie Bennett and Loretta McCready blowing back in (and put to good use)

    • Expanded use of Mary Steenburgen who commands a great deal of this episode as the next person in line to use Ava to her advantage; the latter of whom now pulled in even more directions.

All of this, with assured writing and direction make for an amazing hour of TV.

    9/10
