» » Zombie Prom (2006)

Short summary

A teenage romance between a good girl and a bad boy spirals out of control leaving a trail of nuclear waste.

This movie was available for one month only as a free download on iTunes in the fall of 2007.

In its stage version, Zombie Prom was a full-length musical with roughly 22 songs. For the film, a great deal of dialogue and and music were dropped (although the plot is still roughly the same), giving the film a runtime of a slightly over 30 minutes. Among the songs that were dropped are "Rules, Regulations, and Respect" - a song in which Miss Strict teaches the students the principles of discipline, "That's the Beat For Me" - a song in which Eddie Flagrante proclaims his love for his job as a tabloid news reporter, "The Voice in the Ocean" - a duet for Jonny and Toffee in which Jonny explains how and why he came back from the dead (he had been buried at sea in a lead-lined coffin in the stage version), "Case Closed" - a trio for Eddie, Miss Strict, and Jonny in which all three argue about whether or not Jonny should be allowed to re-enroll at Fermi High, "Exposé" - a duet for Miss Strict and Eddie in which they relive their passionate past, and "Forbidden Love" - a duet for Jonny and Toffee in which they reaffirm their love for one another. Plus, there were several other musical moments that were turned into (much shorter) dialogue in the film.

This film is based on the stage musical of the same name. It was first performed at the Red Barn Theater in Key West, Florida in 1993 and opened off-Broadway at the Variety Arts Theater in 1996.

On stage, the show had a cast of ten, with the people playing Coco, Candy, Ginger, Joey, Jake, and Josh doubling as Eddie Flagrante's news-writing staff and members of the crew of Eddie's TV show, Exposé.

The stage musical was also adapted for a German version called "Zombie Ball", which was particularly notable because it marked the first time that Miss Strict was played by a man in drag.

"Jonny Don't Go (To the Nuclear Plant)," the song sung by RuPaul over the ending credits, was taken in its entirety from the stage musical. It was originally sung by Toffee and the girls during chemistry class immediately after Jonny committed suicide.

I saw this hilarious and very original short film at the East Lansing Film Festival.

The creative film is very lively, making fun of the 50s and particularly film like Grease. What I loved so much about this movie is how perfectly choreographed everything was. The song and dance numbers were all very precise but even the moments when people were just walking about it seemed like they were dancing. And the sets and costumes were so perfect, it really set the mood. For a short film it really was expertly filmed, including the excellent comic book cuts, it was very inventive.

RuPaul was perfectly cast as the principal, Miss Strict. And the Toffee and Jonny made a hilarious couple. There were so many wonderful touches throughout the film, like the phone conversations and the TV shows and the bomb scares.

The songs were very catchy and well performed. At about 30 minutes the length is perfect, everything flowed nicely and it all fit together at the end. It would be great to see this made into a feature, but I don't know how it could be improved, it's already so enjoyable at this short length.

See this film then spread the word. It's hilarious with an "H".

Just saw the premier last night in the heart of Boston and I have to say this film swept with outstanding applause and enthusiasm. The cast is a wonderful blend of 50's style poppy characters. The color throughout the film was very eye catching. Great composition along with framing and timing between cuts. The comic book style was most impressive in how it's integrated throughout the film. Costume design is amazing along with the amazing musical look and feel throughout the film. Congratulations! Vince on your fine work. I also congratulate all the people who worked on the film behind he scenes. It's a must see film. ~ Aaron
