William Deforrest is a college freshman who just wants to blend in. His prospects are low and he likes it that way. But after a visit from two members of a secret government agency, he begins to discover a powerful ability that he never knew he had. With the aid of the agency, Will learns to use his ability and agrees to help defend the world from a terrorist threat. However, as he takes on his role as 'The Protector', he begins to unravel unexpected truths about himself, the agency, and the terrorist who calls himself 'The Mayhem'. In the struggle to save the world, Will must face who he is and learn to become the hero they need him to be; their defender, their guardian, The Protector.

The set for the barn was built in two days, by a ten-person crew. There was a barn on that location, but it only had two walls left standing and its foundations were no longer reliable. So, the crew spent a weekend completely restructuring the building, adding additional rooms, walls, and re-roofing it; leaving it in much better condition than when they found it.

The shots outside, overlooking the city, were originally overlooking Los Angeles, but due to the destructive nature of the scene, it was more practical for the visual effects crew to create a new city digitally, as opposed to attempting to digitally destroy the Los Angeles skyline in the original footage. Those shots took the most hours of render out of all the visual effects in the film. One 9 second shot took 96hrs to render.

The Chinese symbols tattooed to Mayhem's hands and face have meanings to his character. The three tattoos say Hate, Vengeance, and Pain.
