For 'State of Flux 2', Laval directed a professional dancer to perform underwater in a pool, testing the body's resistance in an unfamiliar element and under challenging conditions, thus evoking man's struggle with nature and the uncertainty of the human experience. The film also explores the vagaries of subjective perception and challenges the way we see by combining performance and time and exposing the mechanics of vision: the original image was deconstructed into 3 monochromatic channels of respectively red, green and blue before being recomposed and layered slightly off-sync. Using water as an additional lens, Laval generates a non-narrative work rich in texture and surfaces evocative of sculptural forms that oscillate between representation and abstraction and blurs the boundaries between video, performance, sculpture and painting.
