Short summary

"The steamer 'Mascotte' has reached her dock at Port Tampa, and the 2nd Battalion of Colored Infantry is going ashore. Tide is very high, and the gang plank is extra steep; and it is laughable to see the extreme caution displayed by the soldiers clambering down. The commanding officer struts on the wharf, urging them to hurry. Two boat stewards in glistening white duck coats, are interested watchers looking for 'tips' perhaps. The picture is full of fine light and shadow effects."

    Color Troops Disembarking (1898)

Edison short runs fifty-seconds and we see the Battalion of Colored Infatry men getting off the steamer Mascotte and walking a plank to reach a dock. There's not any "story" or real "entertainment" to be had here but it's always fun watching these early films simply because they're a part of history. I doubt there's too much footage of these men so having this as a part of our history is something special. As far as the film goes, it's certainly entertaining in its history but it's also somewhat funny see how nervous the men appear to be walking off the ship. You can see how violent the tides are as it's rocking the camera and you can see that the men are taking their time not wanting to fall off the plank.
