RT59's factory set was constructed from a box of airplane cockpit parts and Darth Vader's cloak.

The machine sounds in RT59's factory were made up of recordings of the steam engine at Coldharbour Mill, a 200 year old spinning mill in the village of Uffculme, Devon.

The background images for London 2.0 are photos of The Catacombs of Paris (Catacombes de Paris). The underground city conceals the large pile of human bones at the bottom of the images.

Cut from the final script are the explanations that the robot that shuts down in Trafalgar Square 2.0 is Molly's robot guardian and her father works at the surface research building where RT59 is being taken to be melted down.

Originally RT59 was called 4359 and BB51 was called 6751. Each individual digit when added to the same digit in the other robots name adds up to 10. 0003 is stood by his partner robot in the park, a dead overgrown girl bot called 0007.

Ed Hartwell has constructed a lyrical tale, set in a lovingly constructed, overgrown London. Here robots find each other and serve the planet, rather than save it. The models are endearing and painstakingly rendered to give them an appropriately metallic look. The collaborators have caught the mood of the piece, all helping to make the work more cinematic: the music, the sets and a supplementary animation sequence. There are film and television references for those who want to try and spot them: better to fall under the spell of the rhyming couplets. Having seen "Time Looters", "Bus Kong" and the excellent "Finger Kingdom", the evidence of "When the Robots woke up" is that Mr. Hartwell's work is becoming more distinctive and more ambitious. He is one to watch and this work is a crowd-pleaser.
