Short summary

Aaron Wingate lost his wife and son some 12 years ago in a Mississippi boat fire and while his wife's remains were found those of his baby boy were not. Ever since, Wingate has been looking for the boy even hiring men to do the job for him. When two of those men come to North Fork, they decide that Mark will do nicely as Wingate's long lost son and wire him to come to North Fork. Convinced that Mark is his long lost boy, Wingate tells Lucas that he will take him to court to get custody. Wingate's men, eager to get the reward money they've been promised, have a easier solution - kill Lucas.

The wanted poster says 1871 and if you add the boy's 12 years to it, that dates this episode at 1883.

    THE RIFLEMAN – A Case of Identity - 1960

Chuck Connors headlines this 1958 to 1963 western series that ran for 168 episodes. Connors is a world class hand with a Winchester rifle.

A pair of men, Herbert Rudely and Chris Alcaide hit North Fork. They are detectives looking for a 12 year old boy who went missing 7 years before. They work for a wealthy St Louis businessman, Royal Dano. Of course Chuck Connors boy, Johnny Crawford fits the description.

Dano soon shows up and claims that Crawford is his long lost son. Nothing Connors says will convince Dano otherwise. Dano intends to take the matter to court and take legal control of the lad.

The two so called detectives, Rudely and Alcaide are getting itchy feet. They want the $2,000 Dano had offered for finding Dano's son. Dano going through the courts, will take more time than they want to wait.

They decide to speed matters up. Alcaide, a fast hand with a gun, figures that if Connors is dead, there will be no need for the courts. Dano can take the boy, and Rudley and himself can collect the reward.

This idea turns out other than planned, as Alcaide is not as fast as he figured. He eats a bit too much lead before he hits the dirt. Rudley now comes clean with Dano about Connor's son, Crawford. He admits they just picked the boy so they could claim the reward. The crest-fallen Dano apologizes to Connors and Crawford.

This episode begins as Aaron Wingate (Royal Dano)and his two detectives arrive at the McCain ranch claiming that Mark is his long lost son. It seems that Mr Wingate and his son was in a riverboat explosion and his son's body was never recovered and he believes that his son may still be alive. Wingate makes these claim and even says that he will take the matter to court in order to get his son back. But before leaving Mr Wingate collapses and has to stay at the McCain farm for the evening.

The two uncanny detective, that will not get paid until the son is officially returned, think of a scheme where Wingate can claim the boy without going to court. But this scheme is not the way Wingate wanted the matter to be solved.

This is another script that is a classic 'Rifleman' episode. A heartwarming show that features the love between a father and son in more ways than one. A pleasure to watch.
