The story is about Akshay (Gaurav) a youth. whose sister has been missing since long he wanders on the streets even at late nights in search of her. one day he befriends (Anamika) who helps him to search his sister with him but destiny has something different for both of them

The film was titled Ashiana. But later changed to Aajj.

The producer Kuljit Pal removed Mahesh Bhatts name from the film as they both had a falling out.

The film lay completed in the cans for 5 years. After the production problems were overcome the producer Kuljit added extra scenes. For example actress Anamika Pal became a karate expert. Akshay Kumar was hired to play her instructor.

Smita Patil completed her dubbing before she passed away.

Rajesh Khanna was offered Aaj and Aaj Ki Awaaz, but as he could not do it, Raj Babbar did the both films.
