Short summary

Potter thinks Hawkeye is a pip, as he has a comeback for everything. But Frank's Purple Heart (for an egg fragment in his eye) is no joke and Hawkeye does not find it funny. Civilian Nurse Meg Cratty (Ann Doran) and her orphans are being shelled; like Blake, Col. Potter is happy to extend the hospitality of the 4077 to Nurse Cratty, her kids and Sung Lee, a pregnant girl who stopped to see her in-laws. All tents (and most hearts) are opened as the kids are bedded down all over the camp. The pregnant Sung Lee stumbles in, shot by a sniper; BJ, fresh from residency, gets to do the Caesarian. Frank is obsessed with thievery; the featherweight Father has to wrestle him to scrub. When Frank finds his Purple Heart is missing, he suspects one of the kids. But, Hawkeye and BJ believe any baby who is shot in the rump on his own birthday is much more worthy and deserving of the honor. Margaret watches the entire ceremony, grinning from ear to ear. As Nurse Cratty and her brood leave, they are ...

This episode is the second in which Frank has been awarded a Purple Heart, both times under dubious (arguably fraudulent) circumstances. The first was in season one's "Sometimes Your Hear the Bullet" when he threw out his back while dancing with Margaret in her tent.

This is a charming episode, showing the human side of the war. Nurse Cratty, who we met when Henry was charged with gross incompetence, brings her orphans to the 4077th because the orphanage is being shelled. There is lots of kindness to go around and some really touching moments. The one that stays with me is when Radar sings a lullaby to a little sleeping boy. The words are so full of pain when one considers the circumstances. The kids are survivors. Frank is about as bad as he can get, having no time for all these "foreigner" and their dirty deeds. A subplot is the appearance of a pregnant young woman who has been hit by a sniper. B. J. is given the task of delivering the baby while attempting to save the woman's life. It's a really engaging episode and nicely done. Margaret is developing more of a character. Again, it's hard to see what she gains from her relationship with Frank. But that's another story.

The opening part of the episode had started with Major Burns obtaining his (so called) Purple Heart Award. He flaunted his medal to Captains Pierce and Hunnicut. The obvious part: Nurse Crady and her children were forced to find shelter at the MASH 4077th. The weird part: the Korean woman (who was pregnant) was not with the group at the time of the shelling.

The kids and Nurse Crady obtained a checkup at the 4077th after reaching the camp. The slick kid (played by Mitch Sakamoto) did everything possible to make Major Burns's life quite difficult -- by taking 50 cents from him -- despite the fact they were struggling to survive in Korea. Colonel Potter did a fine job reading Army books to the kids at the camp during the night. Corporals O'Reilly and Klinger found the wounded pregnant woman inside the camp at the end of the first part of the show.

Captain Hunnicut operated on the wounded woman in surgery; then went after the baby. Colonel Potter scolded Major Burns for not helping out in surgery. First Lieutenant Mulcahy took Major Burns to the Pre-Operating Room for surgery to assist with the likes of Major Houlihan, Nurse Kellye, Captain Pierce, and the other assistants in surgery. The baby became born in the hospital. The mother and the baby recovered quite well after surgery. The baby received the Purple Heart from President Truman. The Final Grade: "B!!" Enjoy
