Short summary

King Me explores the sometimes surreal world of competitive checkers play as seen through the eyes of South African township resident, Lubabalo Kondlo. In 2007, Kondlo, with the help of some sympathetic Americans and under the radar of oppressive forces in his homeland, traveled to the U.S. to compete in the U.S. National Championship of Checkers in Las Vegas, Nevada. A relative unknown in the legitimate checkers world, Kondlo crushed the competition and earned the right to challenge 20+ year reigning World Champ, Ron 'Suki' King. King Me tells the story of a game that struggles for respect, the men and women who love it and how a seemingly meaningless game can change everything for one man who lives life on the fringes.

I loved the way this story is told with humor and passion. The game is much more complex, competitive and skillful than most people realize. The eccentric characters made it colorful and entertaining. It was truly eye-opening to learn about this underworld of a board game and how it changes peoples lives. It takes you to different countries and in doing that it is interesting to see how other cultures live and what checkers means to them. The film makers have a special knack for uncovering a truly unique topic. That is what I look for when I watch documentaries. I want to learn about something, root for someone and be entertained. I can't wait to learn how to play checkers!
