» » Lady Gaga: Perfect Illusion (2016)

Short summary

The music video that accompanied "Perfect Illusion" was directed by Ruth Hogben and Andrea Gelardin. It premiered during the second season of television series Scream Queens on Fox. The video shows Gaga dancing and singing the song in a desert during a rave, with guest appearances by the songwriters and producers. Critics both praised and gave negative feedback regarding the simplicity of the clip.

A dance-rock song, "Perfect Illusion" lyrically delves on the singer's "highest of highs and lowest of lows" in a relationship, and is ultimately a commentary on social media.

Gaga wrote the lyrics using her Underwood typewriter; after numerous permutations the composers derived the final track. Speculation that the song referred to Gaga's ex-boyfriend Taylor Kinney was refuted by the singer.

Music critics gave mixed to positive reviews for "Perfect Illusion", with many of them noting similarities to the work of American musician Bruce Springsteen.

The singer performed "Perfect Illusion" on her Dive Bar Tour and Joanne World Tour, as well during television and media appearances.

In an interview with fashion website Buro247, Ronson claimed that it was one of his favorite recording that he had worked, and commended the associated musicians and writers.

"Perfect Illusion" is written in the key of F minor with a tempo of 125 beats per minute.

Alice Vincent of The Daily Telegraph gave the song four out of five stars, saying that it "delights me to write that this is a return to 'Just Dance'-era Gaga: a simple, infectiously catchy slice of floor-filling, stadium-cheering pop". She also complimented the "rich timbre" of Gaga's vocals on the song, and her emoting.

Spencer Kornhaber from The Atlantic noticed that Gaga was "blubbering like Bruce Springsteen" during the song's verse, but found it lacked irony in her delivery.

Hugh McIntyre from Forbes claimed "the track manages to simultaneously take Gaga in a different direction, while still maintaining some of the qualities that have made her so popular".

Mikael Wood from the Los Angeles Times called the song "a stomping disco-rock jam with a killer robot-Motown groove, buckets of scuzz-punk guitar fuzz and a key change designed to trigger Pavlovian fist-pumps".

In a review for The Daily Beast, Kevin Fallon was very impressed with Gaga's key change and complimented her vocals by describing it as "explosive and jagged, muddying up that tradition".

Rolling Stone ranked it number 28 on their Best Songs of 2016 list, stating, "Gaga fuses her neo-folkie Lilith-hippie mode with her disco roots in this Mark Ronson-produced dance-floor confession.

While ranking Lady Gaga's lead singles from worst to best, Billboard listed "Perfect Illusion" as second-worst, ahead of only "Applause" (2013).

USA Today likened the track to Gaga's past work and said, "While not perfect, it's buoyant and fun enough, we suppose. Just not groundbreaking."

"Perfect Illusion" debuted at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Gaga's 23rd career Hot 100 entry.

The track debuted at number two on the Digital Songs chart with sales of 100,000 digital downloads, and number 25 on the Streaming Songs chart with 8.3 million first-week streaming in the US.

The song accumulated 22 million audience impression in its first week, which was not enough for it to enter the Radio Songs chart.

"Perfect Illusion" reached number five on the Italian Singles Chart and obtained a Gold certification from Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana (FIMI) for selling over 25,000 units.

It was certified Gold by the Music Canada (MC) for selling over 40,000 units.

The song attained top-10 positions in Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Scotland, and achieved a top five placement on the European Digital Songs chart published by Billboard.

This is the music video for "Perfect Illusion", the Lady Gaga song from 2016, so neither a really new or old work by her. This one runs for minimally over 3 minutes and still had 2 people direct it. And this duo worked with (now Oscar winner) Lady Gaga on other occasions as well. Gaga as always plays the main role in this music video and she is stranded in the desert but still jumps around wildly early on instead of saving energy and sweat before she gives a concert performance. But I think this is supposed to imply thatg all the guests partying hard with her are justg an illusion, a fata morgana? Well, a pretty simple story line admittedly. In order to have it not appear completely empty and shallow (no pun intended!), they made a connection to a love relationship with the title that was also an illusion, maybe even a perfect illusion. It is not too clear if Gaga is referring to one of her relationships with that. Slightly catchy song and forgettable music video, it's fine to skip the visual side here and just stick with the record. For me it is a thumbs-down overall. Not recommended.

Back there at the start, this enigmatic shrouded-in-mystery girl with the pseudonym, the brightest spark on the music video scene, the It Girl Supreme, the deluxe diva, and yet, you never had a clear idea of her, she was really like this phantom of the operetta. I only much later learned her name, wow, mouthful, but in my mind's eye she remains this unfathomable vision. Of course, there was BAD ROMANCE, and there her face is briefly seen in its natural state. And she is truly not to be so hidden away behind so much arty facades.

I've only just seen her new video, just downloaded, and while neither the song nor the video can hope to compare with JUST DANCE which brought her to my attention, here it struck me that she is ultra-confident to be herself. Not that she hasn't always been a tornado, it's just that in so many of her videos she is hidden behind layers and layers of some sort. Here she is a ponytailed hot-pants spitfire kicking up a storm dancing wildly to her heart's content, in a video that is straightforward, not the usual Gaga fare we have come to expect. Looks more like a newcomer's debut, than her latest hit.

Somebody here on the board post (at Lady Gaga's entry) posted that he/she/it was very pleased to see this, saying in effect that this was exactly what was needed to quell the Lady Gaga mania. Yes, this is much plainer than most of her other work, this is a sink or swim effort, it will either score big or fade out fast. Might I say that this is a worthy effort and I hope her fans give their support, can't let such an infidel be right.

Been quiet for a while, but still a gale force to be reckoned with.
