Short summary
The film was released more than a year after it was completed.
The part of Eddie O'Rourke, played by Robert Cummings, was originally offered to Gary Cooper, who turned it down.
Generally considered the film that caused Olivia de Havilland to sue Warner Brothers over contract rights. She won the lawsuit, resulting in California Labor Code Section 2855, informally known as the "De Havilland Law".
With the logo "The Mainliner" on the side of Eddie's plane, that would indicate he and Dave were pilots for United Airlines. However, note the American Airlines logo on the ramp used during the stopover in Moline, Illinois.
This film's earliest documented telecast took place in Tucson Thursday 23 August 1956 on KDWI (Channel 9); it first aired in Cincinnati Tuesday 11 September 1956 on WKRC (Channel 12), in Los Angeles Sunday 14 October 1956 on KTLA (Channel 5), in Wichita Tuesday 20 November 1956 on KAKE (Channel 10), and in Portland OR Monday 31 December 1956 on KLOR (Channel 12).
The $150,000 annual allowance Mr. Washburn tells Eddie he would receive (plus expenses) would equate to over $2,200,000 in 2016.
This film won the Best Writing, Original Screenplay Oscar for its only Academy Award nomination.
The White House set used in the final scenes of the movie is the same set used in the final scenes of 1942's "Yankee Doodle Dandy", including the long, wide staircase which George M. Cohan (James Cagney) tap-danced down after receiving his Congressional Gold Medal from President Roosevelt.
Alexis Smith was considered for the lead role in case de Havilland could not complete the film due to her dispute with Warner Brothers.
