Short summary
Ray urges Obama to "Run Barry run" referencing the often-repeated phrase used on The Flash (2014) to encourage speedster Barry Allen to run faster.
The episode title "Guest Starring John Noble" refers to the fact that it was in this episode, that John Noble, made his first on-camera appearance as himself portraying, Denethor the Steward of Gondor from the Sõrmuste isand: Kuninga tagasitulek (2003). For most of the season, John Noble's role has been the voice-over artist for the character Mallus. The reason he was chosen by the Legends was that his voice had an uncanny resemblance to Mallus. John Noble has made a number of noteworthy performances in the sci-fi /fantasy genre over the years, such as Dr Walter Bishop in Ülisalajane (2008), as well as Peata ratsanik (2013), Salvation (2017), The Librarians (2014), and Must nimekiri (2013)
The scene where Sara speaks to Obama about the predicament and what she should do about it was almost cut from the episode.
Rip Hunter admitted that he implanted false memories into Ava, who happened to be a clone. A similar scenario occurred in Blade Runner (1982), since the clones leave the incubator chambers fully developed as adults, they have not had the chance to become well-adjusted people through socialization and years of maturation. The implanted memories provide a buffer or filter through which the clones process their emotions.
Nate created many codes. They include: 1-1-1: Mallus has escaped the time dungeon. 1-3-1: Either Pancakes or someone stole the jumpship. 2-2-2: We're screwed no matter what we do.
The Legends get actor John Noble to imitate the voice of Mallus. Noble has portrayed the actual voice of Mallus all season.
Mick says to Grodd "I should have fried your ass over in 'Nam", a reference to the episode "Legends of Tomorrow: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)".
The Legends actually met "Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien in season two's "Legends of Tomorrow: Fellowship of the Spear (2017)".
Sara told Barack Obama to hold on to his birth certificate, he may need it later. She was referring to the controversy instigated by Donald Trump and the birther movement before he came President in 2016. One of the requirements for becoming President is that a person must be an American citizen and born on US soil, which Trump disputed in the case of Obama, and therefore Obama should be disqualified from the Office of the President of the United States.
Sara describing saving Barack Obama as being "on Obamacare" referencing the federal statute known under the same name enacted by the real-life former President of the United States.
The "Make America Grodd Again" tagline in the promo references the campaign slogan "Make America Great Again" that was once used by Ronald Regan in his 1980 presidential campaign before Donald Trump adapted it in his 2016 campaign.
In the DC comics Mallus is an almost-identically named and similarly-looking metahuman supervillain in the Dakotaverse universe unrelated to most of the DC continuities. While he is not a demon, he shares more then a passing resemblance with Mallus, having similar bestial appearance with occasional bat-like leather wings, having his first appearance in shadows, having a shady and mostly unknown past (including name and time period) as well as creating a group of supervillains with supernatural powers, albeit with a "fail-safe" switch.
Mick says "I gotta get back to Lord of the Rings" a reference to the J.R.R Tolkien novels and Peter Jackson movies of the same name. John Noble was also in Sõrmuste isand: Kuninga tagasitulek (2003) as Denethor, The Steward of Gondor.
Neal McDonough and Erica Tazel, who both appear in this episode, although they do not share scenes together, were both in the show Justified.
When the Legends capture and miniaturize Grodd in a glass jar, Ray says he can gnaw on the remains of the saber-tooth cat's chew toy, a reference to Season 3 Episode 2 entitled "Legends of Tomorrow: Freakshow (2017)".
