Short summary

Sara accompanies Grissom to a mental hospital where one of its inmates has been murdered inside his room. Interviewing patients prove to be harder than usual as most of them are mentally unstable. While the two CSIs are there, they uncover more than just the crime. One of the most shocking discoveries involve a patient with a dark childhood, which is still haunting him, and a nurse with a secret.

The "clay pot as recording media" plot device was investigated in MythBusters: Killer Cable Snaps (2006). They determined that it was so highly unlikely as to be impossible.

Sara's one gold painted fingernail is a nod to co-writer and producer Sarah Goldfinger.

Louise Lombard was pregnant when this episode was shot.

Christian Clemenson would later play the medical examiner on CSI: Miami.

Much of this episode was filmed in the VA Hospital in Sepulveda, which according to the director of the episode, once was a mental institution.

Although listed in the opening credits, Marg Helgenberger, George Eads and Gary Dourdan did not appear in this episode.
