Short summary
Annual televised address by Denmark's Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, focusing on EU, foreigners and families.
In his fifth annual New Year's speech to the Danish people, Prime Minister Nyrup Rasmussen centers on five separate areas of interest: The European Union, in face of the referendum on the Amsterdam treaty. Immigrants and refugees, laying down a double-sided, human but firm line. Families aiming for a less stressful everyday. Environmental issues such as water pollution and the Kyoto treaty. And, as a second step to follow the improvement of the economy, a new but not very specific focus on the improvement of the lives of the weakest groups of society.
The Danish Prime Minister's annual New Years speech is a tradition since 1946 when it was first broadcasted on radio. It was originally a spin-off of the Queen's similar annual speech. Now it is televised annually on the first day of the year on several channels. The Prime Minister's speech is usually taped a few days ahead of broadcasting due to the fact that there is an official state dinner on January 1st. This brought Queen Margrethe of Denmark to call it a "canned speech" in a conversation with Poul Schlüter.
