Short summary

This film has been preserved by the UCLA Film and Television Archive.

When this film was released to television syndication, the opening sequence was deleted. This had the effect of removing the whole short's premise of the goat eating too many cans and then becoming "drunk" by doing so. According to animation historian Jerry Beck, who spearheaded the efforts to preserve this film, this made the whole already nonsensical film make even less sense.

The Terrytoons are oddly interesting, mainly for anybody wanting to see (generally) older cartoons made by lesser known and lower-budget studios. They are a mixed bag in quality, with some better than others, often with outstanding music and with some mild amusement and charm and variable in animation, characterisation and content.

1937, like all the other years for Terrytoons, saw a hit and miss batch, more so than the other years even. Of which 'Pink Elephants' is one of the better ones ranking it in correlation with the rest of the Terrytoons and one of the best 1937 cartoons. There are flaws but also a lot of strengths, and a few things done better than what was seen before. 'Pink Elephants' is well worth watching as an above average watch with more to it than completest sake.

Best asset is the music, which predictably is incredible. It is so beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is great fun to listen to and full of lively energy, doing so well with enhancing the action. The ambitious, elaborate detail in the backgrounds is still great to see, the 1936 Terrytoons showed more fluidity in design than in previous years and some synchronisation is neat. The drawing is more fluid generally.

A fair share of amusing moments, with more gags than there can be usually found and they are all beautifully timed and funny (not always the case with Terrytoons), and there is a lot of zest and natural charm. Also a suitably strange and absurdist quality that was fun and endearing to watch. The characters are amusing and quite relatable here too, with the elephant stealing the cartoon from Farmer Al Falfa, and that it doesn't get saccharine is appreciated. Other than the Cab Calloway-inspired musical sequence, which was so much fun, the highlight was the ending, one of the best and funniest endings for any Terrytoons cartoon in my opinion.

On the other hand, there are occasions where transitions are not as smooth as they could have been.

Likewise, the story, while refreshingly wild for Terrytoons at this point, is thin and with not quite enough surprises. A few moments of staleness in humour though this was only occasional.

All in all, pretty impressive. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Though, for the most part, Terrytoons releases are limited, though fairly competent and enjoyable, the studio did do some very good work. This short is an example of the kind of thing that Paul Terry's studio could do far more often than a lot of people give them credit for (including, I must admit, myself). As I want to talk about this short, this is a spoiler warning:

The short starts with a goat, which eats the fenders and running board from one side of a car. It develops hiccups with an unusual side effect-every one produces an elephant-presumably the pink elephants of the title (I say "presumably", because this short was done in black and white). The elephants frighten the little goat so badly that it runs into the house and upstairs, running under Farmer Al Falfa's bed. One of the elephants materializes in the bedroom and shakes up Al Falfa as well.

The next part of the short consists of a lot of sight gags, culminating in an extended musical riff on Cab Calloway. Al Falfa actually winds up dancing with one of the elephants at one point. This musical section, at least from my point of view, is the highlight of the short.

Just when all looks like it is lost, Al Falfa discovers a weapon. Never underestimate the power of an old man with a vacuum cleaner! The elephants start falling like pins at a bowling alley, until only one is left and it leads a merry chase until it, too, disappears as a puff of smoke into the bag.

The end is very nice and I won't spoil it here. This short is well worth tracking down and watching. Recommended.
