I watched this 1983 episode of Horizon a few weeks after Stephen Hawking died in 2018. It was filmed at a time when his ALS was sufficiently advanced for him to be in a wheelchair but not so advanced that he was using a computer and voice box to communicate. It's simultaneously compelling and appalling watching him slur his way through his discussions with his PhD students and other professors, almost every word he speaks sounding like unintelligible gibberish yet they all seem to completely understand him (made no easier by the fact that what he is talking about - black holes and the like - is incredibly complicated).
